While taking in the breathtaking beauty that is Cinque Terre, I admitted that just three years ago I had no idea that such a place even existed, and yet there we were, eating a panini and drinking a glass of wine in the midst of it.

Cinque Terre, literally Five Lands, is five beautiful cities in a National Park on a mountainous coast near the Italian Riviera.  The mountainous terrain has not stopped the cities from building and flourishing, however.  The National Park has walking trails of various difficulties connecting the cities, and agriculture grows along areas that have been terraced up the mountainside.

For us, just getting there was a good part of the awesome adventure.  We stayed in the port city of La Spezia where we bought tickets for a boat that would take us into the 5 cities.

High seas limited our options, and the tour boat was only stopping at one of the 5 cities, but did take us past all 5 in the process.  Additionally, we made a 2 hour stop at Porto Venere first.  After a cappuccino and some croissants, we explored this small city on a peninsula.

An old city wall.

A beautiful church on the sea.

A grotto with waves crashing in.

We then returned to the boat and headed towards Cinque Terre.

The water was a beautiful color of blue, and even though the waves were a little high, and the seas were a bit choppy, no one ended up seasick (although a couple of us were concentrating hard near the end).

We sailed by Riomaggiore

and Manarola, Corneglia and Vernazza

Along the way we tried to explain and point out to the kids the terracing along the mountainside.  Cory was listening carefully when he interrupted, "Wait, there are terrorists up there?!"  Uh, oh.  I guess we had some more explaining to do...

Eventually we arrived at Monterosso.  It was just all so pretty.

Well, it was all so pretty except for this--this was just odd.

And does this mean we don't need to go to Pisa tomorrow, since we've already seen it now?  Yeah, I'm guessing we should still go.

After a quick lunch, we found a place to hang out on the beach, and we were soon soaking in the sun, searching for rocks and sea glass, and swimming in the sea.

After a couple hours of that, we trained to the next city on the way, Vernazza.  Vernazza was badly damaged by mudslides last fall.  All of the area is susceptible to problems during heavy rains, and even now some of the walking paths between cities are not open.  Regardless, Vernazza was a beautiful little city, and they are working hard to rebuild and repair.  I found some souvenirs here, and the kids found some more sea glass.  We also explored some of the narrow walkways.

Again we trained, this time past Corneglia and on to Manarola.  How beautiful is this train stop with the water right there?

We explored the area a bit and took a few more pictures of the beautiful city built up from the sea.  It was here that we had dinner, and just in time, too, because even though rain had been predicted for the day, it wasn't until we were enjoying dinner safe under a covered patio that rain actually came.

After dinner we located Via dell 'Amore, a walking path that would take us to the final city, Riomaggiore.

This was an easy, wheelchair friendly path, and we even managed to geocache on this path.  The kids made a half-hearted attempt at counting the locks left along the path, sealing people's love for each other.  There were A LOT.

Now dark, we found some gelato and another cappuccino while we waited at the train station for our return ride to La Spezia and our apartment.

Haircut

By now I'm guessing you've noticed the new do on Lucy.  Here is a picture from the hair cutting day.

She's so happy with her bangs.  She's constantly making sure they're laying down on her forehead, and not pulled back.  She gets disturbed when I'm brushing her hair and I pull the bangs back with the brush--worried that they won't be on her forehead.  She doesn't want them pulled back to be washed, although she might quickly change her mind if/when she gets soap in her eyes because her bangs are on her forehead.

We think she looks really cute.

Lake Barcis Day Trip

It was a warm summer day, Ted had a weekday off (after an incredibly painful week of work), so we headed up to nearby Lake Barcis to spend the afternoon.  It was warm, but the water was COOL!
Ted and Riley swam around a lot

Mary got in the water, but she was mostly a bathing beauty

Lucy wanted to see the fishies up close, but every time she walked in, she stirred up the mud and couldn't see anything

It's really a beautiful location
After swimming and lounging for a bit, we walked along the lake and into the city looking for gelato.

Oh, good heavens, what a day this was

We set off one morning for an adventure in the mountains.  We had found some geocaches marked along a ridgeline near Piancavallo and thought it might be a fun way to spend a few hours.  If only we had known what was to follow...

We headed up and followed a narrow road to the path where we began our journey.  Today we took Riley's smaller camera for documentation purposes to lighten Mom's load just a bit (my camera is HEAVY!)  We followed a fairly easy trail and found the first cache.  Ahhh...this is going to be a great day! (even if it is a tad hazy).

Then we were on to our second cache of the day--Lucy spied it!

Children were picking Mom her favorite flowers.  Really...the day could not be more perfect...
We even found a cross.

Wait, is this really a good thing?  Well, let's keep pressing.  The other cache is just a few hundred feet from here.  It's not that far, we can get to it.

Oh wait--it's down this ridiculously steep hill/mountain?

Really?

hmmm... Did I mention that we wandered aimlessly just 20 minutes prior to finding this, following a faulty GPS and in the process Mary got attacked by a bush which stung her on the knee mercilessly?  Maybe these are all signs and we should turn back.

Nah.  Ted can run down there and get it...it won't be too hard.

Let's just say, 300 feet down that mountain and back wasn't pretty, but he did it.  All the while, the kids stood on the ridgeline and got whinier and whinier.  Well, at least one kid did.

Eventually Ted returned to us--3rd cache down.  We are on a roll.  Okay, so there's one more cache down there, and Ted thinks if he follows a trail he can get to it.  But we decide that not everyone can go down the mountain and back up, so Ted and Mary blaze off, and the other three and I stay on the ridge line and follow the trail back up to a road.

And there's little shade, and the water has been well depleted, so our normally cheery and happy-go-lucky Riley is melting in more ways than one.

But Lucy has the camera, and she is now bored, so we have the following pictures documenting this awesome moment in history.

Mom with the gangster look, in the shade of the one tree we found.
Mom and Cory find a fourth cache up here!!!  We truly are on a roll.
Riley is so over this "adventure" and for the second time, tosses out the flowers that Cory has picked and wants saved for later.  I'm not sure what possessed her to throw these out after Cory yelled at her the first time she discarded his flowers, but as we were going through the pictures I saw that Lucy had captured the exact moment that Riley tossed them (that smudge in the air above Riley's head?--that is the flower!)!
Mom's still sporting the gangster look whilst yelling at Riley...
Meanwhile, Lucy takes no less than four pictures of these trail markers.
And she figures out how to take self-portraits, too!

Eventually Ted and Mary returned--without having found the 5th cache. **sigh**  But Ted's legs were looking mighty nice after running up and down the mountain in the tall grasses.  Ugh

And all's well that ends well.  We made it back down a nicely marked trail.

And then rewarded everyone with a lunch and drinks.  Some of us had something a tad stronger than Coke.  And look closely--we had Italian chips and salsa--a spicy marinara sauce and wheat crackers.
Who wants to geocache with us?

Piancavallo hike

Took the kids up to Piancavallo for a hike--followed this trail...
Lucy took a TON of trail marker pictures!

See--Lucy has a camera!

This time we didn't have a geocache to find on the hike, and admittedly it felt a little odd--we usually have a purpose for taking a trail, this time there wasn't really a purpose.  But we had fun, and found lots of other treasures...
Riley worked on a daisy chain

Riley's daisy chain made a lovely crown

Must move large sticks...and throw them...and carry them

and conquer rocks

The proof is in the pictures...

Different

Another difference here:
Pizza--and this is one of those instances where different is VERY GOOD!  My kids still strangely choose to get Anthony's pizza from the base food court--which claims to be "the world's best pizza."  Where are the truth in advertising police?

However, as good as pizza is over here, the Italians aren't afraid to try some very odd combos.  A very common pizza choice is Viennese (or wurstel at some places) which is pizza with hot dog slices on it.  But, even crazier (at least to me) is what some places call Macdonalds pizza--or wurstel e patate fritte...hot dogs and french fries.  I kid you not.
