Dugout

Cory was eager to make a model canoe, and when he found a small piece of wood, he was determined to do so.  After what seemed like endless begging/nagging/reminding, Ted spent a Saturday helping him get going.

They began with a big fire...
Then, Cory notched out a bit along the top of his log.
After that, he used some of the hot coals from the fire and placed them along the notch in the log.

After many hours it was well burned out...  and then began the tests--in which it sunk.

BUT!  after a few applications of gorilla glue, he had a floating canoe!

Now he's in negotiations with his uncle for a full-sized canoe...
